HighPoint’s Food Pantry

Need

Oldham county is the wealthiest county in the state of Kentucky, with an unemployment rate of only 3.3%. It's hard to remember that a county so prosperous still has people in need. Despite this, there are 4,940 individuals in Oldham County who are food insecure. Food insecurity is defined as “…a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life.” Families who are food insecure rely on local food banks to help provide food to ensure their families have enough nutritional food week to week. The HighPoint food pantry is a tremendous resource for these families.

Food insecurity is incredibly harmful to families and individuals, increasing the risk of various health problems and often inhibiting healthy physical and cognitive development in children. Food insecurity is a complex issue that overlaps with many other difficulties and affects all areas of life.

When you consider the harmful effects of food insecurity, it is encouraging to know that HighPoint is helping alleviate some of those effects each time we distribute food to food insecure individuals, families, children, seniors, and veterans.

Clients can come once a week for food support. Each week, clients receive a variety of foods that we have available: fresh produce, canned goods, breads, non-perishables, and meat. In addition, Oldham county residents are eligible for a USDA commodity box once a month

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have altered our normal operations so that we can continue to provide food support while doing our part to prevent the spread of this virus. Our normal operations allow clients to experience a grocery-store style setup, where they can select specific food items they know their families need. At this time, we are preparing selections of food in advance to expedite a drive-thru pickup method. Our volunteers load client cars with fresh produce, canned goods and other non-perishables, breads, meat, and USDA commodity boxes while maintaining a healthy social distance.

Food pantry volunteers complete a variety of tasks, heavy-duty lifting, shelving food, organizing food donations, preparing USDA commodity boxes, and loading food into client cars. If you would like to be a part of the food pantry team, contact us.
