Bonnie Wentz serves as an advocate at HighPoint. Advocates meet individually with clients to discuss their needs and pray together. Thank you, Bonnie, for sharing your story.
“Wow! GOD really takes me out of my comfort zone and challenges me!
Last summer as I downsized, I had so much to give away and wasn’t sure how to donate my household items. However, Patsy in my Bible Study class filled me in on Highpoint. When I met her to drop off my goods, I was given a tour and I was so amazed and overwhelmed by the organization and what they do. So, I mentioned I was drawn to be part of this organization and would sort clothes, hang clothes and do anything they needed me for. Amee mentioned they needed prayer advocates and I immediately said “sure.” Moments later, as I sat in my car I said “GOD, YOU have done it again and taken me way out of my comfort zone. I don’t think I can do this as I’ve never prayed with anyone in this capacity”.Well, I shadowed other advocates for a couple of weeks and began feeling a bit more comfortable, but still had huge reservations. The first people I prayed with, I felt so in tune with and praying came easy. GOD is so good. The realization hit me about my calling to do this when I ran into my Bible Study teacher and told her how from all my experiences in life I could identify with our clients on so many levels. For instance, I was a single mom of three boys struggling to meet ends meet, went through two breast cancer surgeries, was married to a recovering alcoholic and lost my mother at age 12, and watched my husband suffer from an illness before he passed. My Bible Study teacher said “Bonnie, that’s why GOD put you in as an advocate because you had been through the same adversities and difficulties and your heart is with them”. So many happy tears since then….about six weeks ago I prayed with a client about her daughter who had been on drugs for three years. We prayed together and cried together and I always carried her daughter in prayer. Two weeks later, this client came up to me with tears in her eyes and said our prayers worked… her daughter had quit drugs and was being baptized the following Sunday. We just hugged and cried happy tears. GOD certainly knows what HE is doing when he challenges us. I give HIM all the honor and glory.”
